. | Originated in 1997, the Wheelchair
Regatta was conceived as a public service event, involving the many boating
clubs in Northern California. While vessel participation is limited to
power boats, sailors and non-boating volunteers participate in the shore-side
activities.
From the onset, it was decided to invite U.S. veterans from the various hospitals and homes to be our honored guests. The Regatta is aptly named: The majority are, in fact, confined to wheelchairs and walkers. Thanks to the invaluable help of Alameda Fire Fighters and volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard, our guests are lifted on and off the boats, chair and all. After a nice boat ride in protected waters, our guests return to the lawns of Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda. Now it's time for a plentiful lunch, music and entertainment. In 1997, when we entertained 64 veterans, one of them turned to several of our volunteers and said "Thank you. You treated us like REAL people". We hosted 128 veterans in '98, and 225 in '99. 2000 will be bigger yet, and that much more rewarding! Don't miss SEPTEMBER 23, 2000; HELP US WELCOME AND ENTERTAIN OUR "FORGOTTEN PEOPLE": We had a wonderful day at the 1999
